I usually do that with 1 big exception: when I hand over my phone to my kids… and their babysitter. I love open-source code, but when I come across something that needs improvement in an open-source repository, I sometimes hesitate to point it out because I don’t want to be seen as overly critical or ungrateful. However, I recently felt it was the right thing to do when I raised the issue that vapor-community/bcrypt may no longer be relevant in a somewhat positive manner. Most importantly, I want to express my gratitude to @[email protected] for their time and dedication to the Swift Server Workgroup. 💻

The NYT asks if people really need to shower every day. I am really glad to read this. I stopped showering every day a couple of years ago. Why? Saving water, energy, and… I really feel like I don’t need to since I started wearing clothes that don’t get smelly as fast as cotton (such as merino wool or technical fabrics like Uniqlo’s Heattech). 🌱

Bandcamp Schadenfreude. I was offered a deal to become an employee for Bandcamp back in 2011. Then the deal was off for reasons that didn’t make sense. Since then, I had mixed feelings: I liked the product as a listener, not so much as a musician, and I resent founders and managers from then — I know I shouldn’t but I do — and I am not sure they are genuinely nice people. 💻

I have a songbook GitHub project that contains chordpro files and creates my own PDF songbook. I geeked out a bit so that the PDF is generated by a GitHub action and uploaded to my new web home that I am slowly building brick by brick. You can see the final result on my Guitar Songbook page. 🎸💻

I just found out this project by Aaron Parecki. I just moved to a new city and trying to find local events forced me to spend time on Facebook, which is the de facto solution for venues to advertise events. An alternative would be great so I love that Meetable exists. I know nothing from the tech stack though so not sure I could contribute or tune it for my needs if i was willing to invest time on it for a side-project. 💻

It is a good reminder of what pages need maintenance. It gives me a chance to read random older posts. This time, reading my eulogy for R.E.M. — written in French and that I have forgotten about — was particularly fun.

🎸 I fell in some intense Interpol nostalgia these last weeks. And i learnt how to play Say Hello to the Angels on the guitar. I also tried to understand how “it works” in terms of music theory.

Most of the guitar resources online lack interactivity and visual cues (even videos, which mostly show narrators speaking).

I wonder if there is an unexplored way to write nice interactive blog posts about learning how songs are constructed.

👨‍💻 Yesterday, I pulled out my Sortmash iOS app code off dusty shelves as I needed to sort a large amount of data by order of preference — namely my Sorare cards 🤦‍♂️ — and it was a very fun experience. Exploring a pre-ARC Objective-C with embedded dependencies — TouchJSON and ASIHTTPRequest — felt like traveling in time, and made me so grateful of where we stand now. Making the code run again was surprisingly easy but visually very buggy since the code was from an era where iPhone and iPad had each a unique screen size.

🍿 I just finished watching the first three seasons of Schitt’s Creek and, while it took me while to get into it — hello xkcd — I am now on board to complete the three remaining seasons. From what I heard from the show, I was expecting many lough-out-loud moments, it turns out it is a much warmer show with great characters that you grow attached to.

🍿 I am inspired by the ability of young children to watch the same movie over and over again during a short period of time. These days, it’s Robin Hood and Beauty and the Beast. I now tend to watch movies that I have watched already. I like how a movie you watched 2 or 3 times can become familiar, the same way you can get very familiar with a music album.

🏀 Mac McClung’s performance at the All Star Game Dunk Contest is quite phenomenal. His head can reach the rim and he is just 3cm taller than me. I could hardly touch the rim at the height of my jumping skills.

🏀 I watched the Doc Rivers episode of The Playbook on Netflix. I already had a soft spot for the guy since his Celtics time. Now I like him even more. Powerful and heartwarming stuff in there.

👾 I have been playing Moncage on my iPad. Recommended. It is a beautiful game and it has a beautiful soundtrack. I liked the hints too cause advancing can take time every now and then. And I love games with the old-fashioned business model of pay-once-enjoy-infinitely.

🎧 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, via his excellent newsletter, made me discover At Seventeen by Janis Ian. I knew the tune because it was adapted in French (quite poorly I now realize) but the original lyrics are much more powerful and Janis is such a great singer that I now see the song through a much more flattering light.

🏀 Sorare NBA GW29 was very frustrating. Many injuries (Anunoby, Williams) and disappointing performances from players or coaches (Aldama, Batum, Lue). After a 9 GW streak of rewards, this is my 2nd GW of what is now a losing streak. This being said, reviewing my lineup with the optimization tool I wrote confirmed that I didn’t have a set of cards that could have done amazingly this time.

🎧 RIP Tom Verlaine. Every time I listen to Television I realize I should listen to them way more often than I do. Inevitably I then shift to Feelies, Gang of Four and finish with Pixies.
