The Neverending Search for the Definitive Champagne Supernova

For over 20 years, I believed that the best live version of Oasis' Champagne Supernova was from the International Cardiff Arena in 1996. It features a dynamic tempo, a clean and full sound with no dull parts, the wah-wah effect, and the tuned-down flanger effect at the end.

However, after discovering the Budokan 1998 version, I find my convictions wavering. Some notes feel unnecessary—the bends at 7:30 and 7:40 aren’t great—but the tempo doubling at 7:55, while typically a cheap trick, creates an incredible ending I had never heard before. It lasts almost 12 minutes. F**king biblical.

From now on, I will spend the rest of my life wishing for a perfect blend of the two versions.

Du Stade Rennais à Samuel Barber, via Muse

Dimanche dernier, j’ai assisté au match Rennes - Paris FC, qui a offert un joli spectacle, même si revoir Mahdi Camara et Pierre Lees-Melou sous des tuniques différentes et si loin du stade Francis Le Blé m’a un peu pincé le cœur. L’équipe rennaise est solide. En gardant ses éléments essentiels et en ajoutant quelques pièces stratégiques lors de l’intersaison, la prochaine saison pourrait être très prometteuse (je pense notamment à un profil offensif pouvant ajouter un brin de créativité tout en sachant défendre, un profil à la… Désiré Doué ? 🙃). Le feu d’artifice pour clôturer la saison à domicile était très réussi, et il m’a fallu mener l’enquête pour retrouver que le morceau joué par la violoniste était Adagio for Strings, de Samuel Barber.

Fun fact : j’ai retrouvé ce titre grâce à Muse. En tentant de jouer la mélodie au piano, j’ai eu l’impression de jouer l’intro de Plug in Baby, et c’est cette vidéo de David Bennett qui m’a aidé. Adagio for Strings y est présenté comme inspiration du morceau… Interlude, quelques secondes avant que Plug in Baby ne soit présenté comme largement inspiré de la Toccata et fugue de Bach.

Shrinking S3

After a few episodes of season 3, my wife and I were grateful to hang out with Shrinking’s characters again — but also surprised by how few real conflicts they faced. Conflict usually drives a story, yet here it barely surfaces. When it does, mid-season, it feels almost incidental.

Shrinking deals with conflicts at the opposite end of the spectrum from something like Seinfeld. Every internal struggle is discussed in the open and solved quickly, as opposed to a new drop in George Costanza’s already overflowing bowl of agitated anxiety.

It’s almost a literal feel-good show, with sharp fast-paced dialogue, a terrific ensemble cast — Harrison Ford leading the regulars, with the addition of personal hall-of-famers Michael J. Fox and Jeff Daniels — that you watch losing count of both laughs and tears.

Voici Un Hiver 2026, la nouvelle compile faite à 4 mains avec mon ami Joe Gantdelaine. La dernière édition, Un Automne 2025, était déjà une compile de vieux, là c’est pire. Des pépites oubliées de Johnny ou Stephan Eicher, et un bonbon nostalgique de Dorothée — sic — feront fuir les moins audacieux. Les autres profiteront de Mitski — l’album Nothing’s About to Happen to Me est une pépite —, Lime Garden — en concert à Rennes en mai —, ou de la redécouverte permanente des Bewitched Hands (puis par ricochet de Black Bones).

Catherine O’Hara est sur la pochette.

The opening self-parody works. Mini-Me becoming Mini-Austin is hilarious. Michael Caine is brilliant. The mole scenes with Fred Savage are memorable. 20-year-old Beyoncé is already a star. 🍿

No surprise: a solid film from the always-reliable Illumination Studios. It’s a crowd-pleasing fan-service ride packed with lovable characters, strong music cues, and well-placed nostalgic nods. The plot is predictable, as expected.

The 3D + Dolby screening was pricey, but we had Chandler & Joey–style recliners, which made the premium feel worth it.

The story is tight, and the comic beats land because of Ryan Gosling’s timing and range. With any other lead, the tone would skew darker or lighter and lose the balance. He’s the Harrison Ford of this generation. The karaoke scene stands out, and the soundtrack is consistently strong. I recommend seeing it in theaters.

TIL La biographie de Jean Chalopin ressemble au scénario d’un Serge le Mytho.

Une récente édition de la newsletter de l’INA propose son portrait, qui le décrit comme « le papa d'Ulysse 31 et des Mystérieuses Cités d’Or ». Dès la fin de cette vidéo, j’ai plongé dans le trou de lapin, qui m’a amené à découvrir qu’il avait ensuite contribué à sortir la Gaîté-Lyrique de l’abandon pour la transformer en parc d’attractions, Planète magique, fermé après seulement 12 jours d’ouverture (et qui fait l’objet d'une vidéo de la chaîne Arkeo Toys). Il était récemment président d’une banque aux Bahamas liée aux cryptomonnaies.

Sortez le popcorn et allez-y.

Fini de lire La Disparition de Josef Mengele, d’Olivier Guez. Assez proche dans l’idée de L’Adversaire, que je venais de lire : éclairer sous forme romanesque les zones d’ombre d’une histoire criminelle, ici la cavale après-guerre de Mengele. Là aussi, il faut avoir le cœur bien accroché quand on arrive aux descriptions précises des crimes commis. 📚

Not as bad as I feared it would be. I chose it on a strong impulse to introduce Jim Carrey to my kids, while dismissing The Mask as potentially too violent, crazy, or scary for them. The film is quite predictable, but it offers good ideas—the phrasing of Pippi Pepenopolis topping the list—and, of course, it will make you tear up at the end. And — I had totally forgotten this —, one of the writers is no other than Sean Anders, who has written and directed some of my favorite comedies of all time. 🍿

Plusieurs replays de la cérémonie des Césars 2026 m’ont tapé dans l’œil avec en premier lieu l’intro d’abord émouvante puis épatante de Benjamin Lavernhe et le passage musical avec -M-. La transformation, le roast gentil, la chanson finale, le tout était inhabituellement réussi et bien rythmé, malgré un public parfois ingrat voire sinistre. Même la stomp box de Matthieu Chedid a eu du mal à le faire réagir (à comparer avec celui des Golden Globes, avec un roast un peu plus prononcé de Nikki Glaser)

Au même titre que Lavernhe, plus jeune que moi de quelques années, Jim Carrey est une idole de ma jeunesse. J’ai voulu regarder The Mask avec les enfants mais c’est sans doute trop tôt et nous nous sommes rabattus sur… Monsieur Popper et ses pingouins.

Fini de lire Paul, par Hervé Bourhis. J’ai appris pas mal de choses sur l’immédiat après-Beatles de Paul McCartney (1969-1973). La composition est originale, très colorée avec une palette rose/bleu/violet. Vivement recommandé, surtout à ceux qui ont les connaissances de base sur l’histoire des Beatles. 📚 × 🎵

A classic for a reason, this film offers a fresh take on the damsel in distress story. It combines absurd humor with the typical elements of a princess narrative. I’m continually fascinated that Iñigo Montoya is played by the same actor as Saul Berenson in Homeland. It also brings back memories of my childhood crush on Robin Wright during her time in Santa Barbara when I was just 5 or 6. 🍿

Fini de lire : L’Adversaire d’Emmanuel Carrère. Une non-fiction sur l'affaire Romand. Une histoire aussi sordide que fascinante. Il faut avoir le cœur bien accroché à la lecture du chapitre qui décrit les meurtres. Déconseillé au moment du coucher. 📚

J’ai été épaté par la performance d’Alysa Liu. Il y avait un mélange unique d’excellence, de maîtrise et de joie de pratiquer son art. Et la musique — MacArthur Park, de Donna Summer — était parfaite : l’enchaînement saut/changement de rythme avec entrée de la basse/batterie, et le public qui répond par des cris et des applaudissements était un spectacle magique. She kicked some ass!

The Atlantic a partagé une série de photos très créatives. Les images par drone étaient aussi incroyables.

Les Jeux Olympiques de Milan-Cortina sont à peine terminés et je souffre encore de FOMO. J’ai l’impression de ne pas avoir assez profité de cet événement et d’avoir raté pas mal de trucs — notamment la finale de hockey masculin entre les États-Unis et le Canada.

It's a fun movie. Like most comedies with a gimmick plot, the first half is much more convincing than the second. However, it's still very funny. Amy Adams is remarkable; pay attention to how she uses her arms, reflecting a Disney princess demeanor. Before watching it with your kids, watch at least Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty with them, as there are numerous references to older Disney movies. 🍿

I enjoy this movie more with each viewing; this might be my third or fourth time watching it. As a former amateur musician, the film truly resonates with me. It explores education and emphasizes the importance of allowing kids to pursue their own dreams rather than conforming to their parents' wishes. The final scenes always make me tear up out of joy. Knowing that Mike White, the writer, is behind both Migration and The White Lotus has deepened my appreciation for the movie even further.

Finished reading: Maniac, by Benjamin Labatut. The book traces the evolution of mathematics toward artificial intelligence, passing through the atomic bomb along the way.

The first section focuses on Paul Ehrenfest. Disturbed by the growing unintelligibility of quantum theory and struggling with depression, he ultimately killed his disabled son and himself. His story introduces the book’s central theme: minds overwhelmed by the implications of their own field.

The second and longest section centers on John von Neumann, from child prodigy in Hungary, to architect of nuclear strategy — as part of the Manhattan project — and pioneer of modern computation — through the MANIAC computer. Each chapter is told from the perspective of someone in von Neumann’s orbit: family members, friends, or colleagues.

The final section turns to Lee Sedol and his defeat by AlphaGo in a historic Go tournament.

Across its three parts, the book examines how extreme intellectual brilliance fuels transformative breakthroughs — and how those breakthroughs blur the line between reason and madness, creation and annihilation, human mastery and human obsolescence.

j’éprouvais non seulement une tristesse accablante devant le sort de mon ami d’entance, qui tombait à présent en chute libre vers la mort, le déclin et peut-être même - Dieu l’en garde - la folie, mais une touche de soulagement qui m’a rendu extrêmement honteux. Oui, songeais-je, Janos était humain après tout, pas seulement un génie mais aussi un ivrogne imbécile, comme nous tous.
